THE EXPERIENCE

The morning of your wedding is one of the most special parts of the day. It is full of excitement, anticipation, and those once-in-a-lifetime moments you will want to remember forever. The way you prepare for it can make all the difference to how your photos turn out. Over the years, I have photographed hundreds of weddings and I have learned a few insider secrets to make those “getting ready” photos look just as beautiful as they feel in the moment.

1. Choose the right space

Natural light is your best friend. Whenever possible, get ready in a room with large windows and plenty of soft, natural light. Neutral or light-coloured walls also help bounce light beautifully. If you have the choice between a cluttered bedroom or a bright, airy living space, go for the latter. The difference in your photos will be huge.

2. Keep it tidy

It is amazing how quickly a space can fill with bags, makeup, clothes, and champagne glasses. A little preparation goes a long way. Designate one corner of the room for anything that is not photogenic, and keep the rest of the area clear. This makes sure the focus stays on you, your loved ones, and the emotions of the moment.

3. Have your details ready

Before I arrive, gather all the little details you want photographed – your dress, shoes, veil, jewellery, perfume, stationery, and anything sentimental. Having them ready means I can style and photograph them straight away without interrupting the flow of your morning. This is also a great way to make sure nothing gets missed.

4. Time your hair and makeup carefully

Aim to have hair and makeup finished at least 45 minutes before you need to leave. This gives you a relaxed window for touch-ups, candid moments with your bridal party, and those beautiful robe shots or champagne toasts. Rushed mornings can show in your photos, so a buffer of extra time is worth it.

5. Surround yourself with the right people

Your energy in the morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. Choose to have people around you who make you feel calm, confident, and happy. Whether that is your bridal party, your mum, or just your partner, a positive, relaxed atmosphere will shine through in your images.

Why it matters

Getting ready photos are about more than just hair, makeup, and clothes. They capture the quiet moments, the laughter, the anticipation, and the emotions you will never experience in the same way again. Following these insider secrets helps create a setting where those moments can unfold naturally – and be captured beautifully.
